Here in Austin we are lucky enough to have the Mellow Johnny’s bike shop (http://mellowjohnnys.com) or MJs for short. For those that don’t know, Mellow Johnny’s happens to be owned by 7 times winner of the Tour De France Lance Armstrong.
There are actually two Mellow Johnny’s shops, the one located in downtown Austin (known as the World Headquarters) and the other in Fort Worth, Texas (known as the Trailhead).
JUAN PELOTA CAFE
What makes Mellow Johnny’s stand out from most cycling shops beyond being owned by Lance, is it’s classic building and coffee house called Juan Pelota Cafe or One Ball. People flock to MJ’s to chill at Juan Pelota Cafe and enjoy the free internet.
FREE COMMUTER SHOWERS
Another really cool feature of Mellow Johnny’s is their free shower facilities. Anyone who commutes to downtown Austin by bike is welcome to use the showers.
WEEKLY RIDES
Just about every day there are a rides leaving the downtown Austin shop. To get full details check out http://austin.mellowjohnnys.com/rides-events/weekly-rides One of my favorite rides is called the Truancy ride and it takes place on Friday’s at 2:30pm. People from all over the world show up for this weekly ride.
LANCE ARMSTRONG STAGES
Mellow Johnny’s will often be featured in Lance Armstrong’s Stages FB Live videos (a 2017 Tour De France recap) and in Lance Armstrong’s WEDU sport venture.
How did Lance come up with the name Stages and WeDu? Stages represents Lance’s stages of life and now he appears to be in a new stage becoming a FB live/podcaster phenom. WeDu represents when people show up to workout or do a ride. If you were to ask them who wants to workout or ride…”We Do”.
What’s with the spelling of WeDu. Lance said it just seemed cooler to spell it that way.
MELLOW JOHNNY’S BIKE SHOP
The bike shop offers a wide selection of bikes (both mountain and road), apparel, nutrition and gear. Mellow Johnny’s is an authorized Trek, Giant and Cannondale dealer. Mellow Johnny’s also carries their own branded apparel and cycling kits.
SERVICE SHOP
MJs is a full service bicycle shop and their bike mechanics are top notch. I have had my bike there several times and always walked away very satisfied.
PEDAL HARD TRAINING CENTER
If you are looking for a little personal training or supervision to boost your cycling and take you to the next level, the Pedal Hard training center is located in the basement. It doesn’t come cheap. They offer both group package rates and individualized personal training. Prices start around $199 for personal training and group ride packages are around $299.
