I got to be honest, a while back I was in the market for a backpack I could travel with. Ultimately I settled on the WANDRD PRVKE backpack.  Unfortunately, the Peak Design Everyday Backpack wasn’t available at the camera store I often visit (Precision Camera), so I didn’t have a chance to check it out.

From my experience what separates the WANDRD PRVKE vs Peak Design’s Everyday Backpack is ease of use.  While the WANDRD PRVKE is an exceptional backpack, the Everyday Backpack is more simplistic in design and as such is quicker to use when on the go.

My view of the 20L Everyday Backpack is that of a day pack, allowing me to carry what I need for short excursions and photo shoots.  The good news is I now own both, so I am covered for extended travel and daily trips.

Everyday Backpack 20L vs 30L 20 Liter vs 30 Liter

The Everyday Backpack comes in both a 20L and 30L version.

For most situations, the 20L backpack is the one to get.  It’s a little more manageable and it’s smaller footprint means it’s much easier to handle and carry.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack 8L Expandiblity

Peak Design Everyday Backpack 8L expandability

The backpack can be expanded an additional 8 liters when fully loaded.

While the Everyday Backpack’s expandability allows you to carry extra gear, it does come with one glaring flaw.  When the bag is fully packed using the additional 8L of space, gaps appear near the top.  These gaps can easily allow rain, sleet, and moisture into the backpack.  If the weather turns sour, it best not to overstuff the backpack when venturing outside.  Backpacks like the WANDRD PRVKE, with their roll top design, prevent this issue from happening, even when overstuffed.

One option that might eliminate moisture from entering the backpack would be to design a roll top flap or zipper flap.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Weatherproofing

What makes the Peak Design Every backpack stand out is the material used.  Peak Design uses a weatherproof 400D nylon canvas shell with high-density padding, durable water-repellent (DWR) coating impregnated and poly-coated twice on both sides, plus premium weatherproof exterior zippers.  Meaning this backpack is designed for the outdoors and mother nature’s wrath.

The material feels a little rough, but it seems super durable and is able to brush off scratches from tree branches and other sharp objects.

When deciding how to pack your Everyday Backpack, you have a lot of options.  The 20L can carry a large DSLR or Mirrorless camera, multiple lenses, a small drone and drone controller, a 15″ laptop, an iPad and still have plenty of room for accessories like batteries, flash cards, and cords.  The outside pockets can hold a tripod or water bottles or both.  The 30L backpack can hold even more with its extra 10Ls of space.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Side pocket Access

One of the unique features of the Everyday Backpack is it’s dual side weatherproof zippers, allowing access from either side.  This allows quick access to the main compartment and most of your gear.  When unzipped each side comes with its own zippered compartment, allowing for extra storage of small items including glasses, phones, batteries, flash cards, and cords.

The Everyday Backpack comes with 3 velcro dividers, which allow full customization of the main compartment.  The padded dividers can be used as a shelf, a cubby or even allow larger items to pass through.

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Q&A

Can You Use The Everyday Backpack As A Regular Backpack?

YES – I typically will remove at least one or maybe 2 of the internal dividers when using it as a regular backpack.

Does The Everyday Backpack hold a 15″ laptop?

YES – It is a tight fit though.

How tall of a tripod will fit inside the bag?

I would not recommend carrying a tripod in the bag, but if you do you will probably be able to carry a small 14 or 15-inch tripod.  Bigger tripods should probably be carried in the side pockets.

How do you feel about the padding in this bag?

The padding seems very adequate to carry camera gear including lenses, bodies and other equipment.

Where are the backpacks made?

Unfortunately, they are made in China, which IMO is a negative.

Can you take the Everyday Backpack 20L and 30L on an airplane as a carry-on?

YES – both the 30L and 20L are airline approved by all major airlines.  I have had zero issues traveling with these size backpacks.

Does the Peak Design capture camera clip come with the 20L everyday backpack?

NO – The Peak Design capture camera clip is a separate purchase.

Do you recommend the Everyday Backpack for business travel?

YES – The Everyday Backpack would work as an excellent travel backpack with or without camera gear.  For longer trips, I prefer to use the WANDRD PRVKE 31L because it has more space.

While wearing the backpack, can you access the gear inside without setting the bag down?

YES – The backpack can be swung around and the main compartment can be accessed by unzipping one of the side panels.

How is the 20L of the bag measured?

The liter capacity is measured when the bag is attached at the lowest latch.  The 20L backpack can expand an additional 8 liters, for a total of 28L when attached at the highest latch.

Are the Everyday Backpack’s internal dividers removable?

YES – There are 3 dividers that use velcro to attach to the inside of the bag and they are all removable.

Bottom Line

Peak Design Everyday Backpack Bottom Line

Well that’s it for today.  If you end up buying the Peak Design Everyday Backpack you will not be disappointed.  It’s a great all around backpack for photographers and videographers with super easy access to the main compartment.  The weatherproofing and padding on the backpack give you lots of confidence that everything will be kept safe and secure.

I prefer the 20L for it’s smaller profile over the 30L.  It still has plenty of space and you can even squeeze an additional 8 liters by over stuffing it a bit.  The only real drawback I could find is when and if you do decide to overstuff it, there are gaps at the top that can let rain and moisture in, so just be careful.

Peak Design says the 20L is default 12L and max 20L. You say 20L minimal en 28L max. What is the truth?

    • Tom Crandall

From what I have read, 20L is up to the first buckle and you can add an extra 8L if you use the last buckle. Either way, I think the 20L bag is just about perfect for anyone with a camera and a few lenses + plus some extra gear.
