REP Fitness Smith Machine Rack Attachment Review: Easy Installation and a Thick 35mm Bar

The REP® Smith Machine Rack Attachment has two features that stand out to me: straightforward installation and a whopping 35mm bar. For a home gym owner looking to add Smith machine training to a compatible REP rack, those are meaningful details.

The installation makes the upgrade approachable, while the oversized bar gives it a noticeably different feel from a traditional barbell. That thicker grip is one of the features I like most.

  • Thick 35mm bar provides a comfortable, substantial grip

Cons

  • Not compatible with Omni, Apollo, Rogue, or Fringe Sport racks

  • Compatibility depends on rack depth and cable system configuration
  • May limit placement of safeties, spotter arms, and other accessories

Easy Installation Without Taking Your Rack Apart

Adding equipment to an established garage gym can turn into a bigger project than expected. An attachment sounds convenient until you realize how much of your existing setup needs to come apart.

REP keeps that process relatively straightforward here. According to REP, the attachment mounts with the included hardware and does not require rack disassembly. Loosening the upper and lower crossmembers may help during installation.

That is a big part of the appeal. You can expand what your rack does without starting your gym build over again. I would still plan the attachment’s position before assembly, especially if the rack already holds other accessories.

Easy installation is a selling point, but choosing the right configuration comes first.

The Whopping 35mm Bar Is a Highlight

The bar measures approximately 1.37 inches, or 35mm, in diameter. Compared with a bar in the 28–30mm range, that gives you an additional 5–7mm of thickness.

That might sound like a small difference on paper, but it changes how the bar feels in your hands. Instead of a relatively narrow shaft, you get a substantial grip with more surface to hold.

For me, that is a positive. I like the fuller feel of the bar, and the larger diameter makes it comfortable to hold. It is the kind of detail that is easy to overlook when comparing attachments online but deserves attention in a review.

Of course, grip preference is personal. Someone who loves a thinner bar may have a different reaction, particularly during pulling exercises where wrapping the fingers around a thicker shaft can be more demanding. My preference is for the substantial feel this 35mm bar provides.

Rack Compatibility: Check Your Exact Setup

This attachment is designed for REP PR-4000 and PR-5000 racks in both 80-inch and 93-inch heights.

RackCompatibility
REP PR-4000, 80-inch or 93-inchSupported, subject to configuration
REP PR-5000, 80-inch or 93-inchSupported, subject to configuration
REP Omni RackNot compatible
REP Apollo Half RackNot compatible
Rogue 3×3 racksOutside REP’s stated compatibility
Fringe Sport 3×3 racksOutside REP’s stated compatibility

The important takeaway is that 3×3 uprights alone do not establish compatibility. This is an attachment for the supported REP rack systems, rather than a universal option for any rack with similar dimensions.

REP also specifies that four-post racks with Ares or Athena cable systems are incompatible; supported six-post configurations can integrate those systems. Rack depth and attachment placement affect clearance and safety compatibility, so review REP’s configuration guidance before ordering.

Final Thoughts

The REP Smith Machine Rack Attachment deserves a look if you own a compatible PR-4000 or PR-5000 and want to expand your rack’s capabilities. Straightforward installation is a strong starting point, and the whopping 35mm bar is the feature that stands out most to me.

Check your exact rack configuration first. If it fits your setup and you enjoy a thicker grip, those two features make a compelling combination.
